One of the most iconic filming locations is Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England, which served as the backdrop for several memorable scenes in the first two films: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (or "Philosopher's Stone" in the UK) and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by the castle’s stunning architecture and dramatic history. Alnwick Castle dates back to the 11th century and boasts rich interiors and expansive grounds.

Brief History of Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle was built in the 11th century and has served as a home to the Percy family for over 700 years. The castle has been renovated and expanded over the centuries, resulting in an impressive blend of architectural styles, from medieval fortifications to luxurious Georgian interiors.
One of the castle's most notable owners was Harry Hotspur, a medieval knight who famously fought alongside King Henry IV against the Scots. The Percy family played a significant role in English history and were closely involved in many notable events, including the Wars of the Roses.
Today, Alnwick Castle and gardens are privately owned by the 12th Duke and Duchess of Northumberland.

Getting to Alnwick Castle

The castle is located in the town of Alnwick, which is easily accessible by car or public transportation. There is also a good amount of parking available on-site.

Alnwick Castle is located in the town of Alnwick, Northumberland, approximately 30 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne.

By Car

If you’re driving, the castle is easily accessible via the A1 road and is just under a mile off the A1. There is a parking lot available for visitors. You’ll find the castle is well-signposted on the road.

By Train

The nearest train station is Alnwick (but be aware that it’s not directly served by trains; you’ll need to take a bus or taxi from Alnmouth train station, which is about 3 miles away).

By Bus

Various bus services connect Alnwick with Newcastle and other nearby towns. For visitors coming from Newcastle, the X15, X18, and X20 buses depart from the city's Haymarket bus station, offering a scenic journey to Alnwick. The Castle is just a five-minute walk from the bus station.

Parking at Alnwick Castle

The postcode for the main Alnwick Castle car park is NE66 1YU. This car park is located off Denwick Lane (B1340). 
Alnwick Castle parking costs $4.73 for the day and they currently only accept card payment.
The car park opens at 9am during the castle's open season.

Best Time to Visit

Alnwick Castle is not open all year round. Thier open season falls between the end of March and October; outside of this, they are closed for the winter season.
Admission prices vary depending on the time of year and type of ticket purchased. However, check the official website for specific dates and times, especially during off-peak seasons.
Seasonal Events: Visiting during special events, such as the Alnwick Castle Christmas festivities or summer activities, can enhance your experience. The weather is generally mild in late spring and summer, making it the best time to visit.

Adult Tickets (17+ years – 59 years) when bought online: $29.11
Note: All tickets purchased online are automatically season passes, valid for 12 months from your first visit, with unlimited re-visits during opening hours.
No need to book ahead for re-visits—just show your pass and valid ID at the gate. Tickets bought at the Castle Admission office can be upgraded at no extra cost on the day of your visit.
You can purchase tickets at the admission office on arrival. However, if you purchase your tickets online you can save 10% and have an annual pass at no extra charge.

Which Harry Potter Movie was Filmed at Alnwick Castle?

Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets (2002).
Alnwick Castle was used for the interior and exterior of Hogwarts castle in both movies.

The Outer Bailey – Broomstick and Quidditch lessons

As you go through the courtyard, you should head on into the Outer Bailey. 
The Outer Bailey is where Harry and his fellow students first learned to fly broomsticks with Madam Hooch. and where Oliver Wood later goes on to teach Harry Potter about the rules of Quidditch. Keep your eyes peeled for the statue on the tower nearby. That's where they bat the Quaffle ball through. 
This is also the spot where you can learn to fly a broomstick yourself. More on that below.

The Bailey Tower – where Neville Longbottom loses control of his broom

Look for the huge tower in the Outer Bailey, you’ll recognize it from the first movie. During this flying lesson scene with Madam Hooch, Neville Longbottom loses control of his broom. Neville flies over the castle, crashes and gets his cloak caught on one of the statues on the wall.

The Inner Bailey and Courtyards

The Inner Bailey is right next to the entrance to the stateroom. The Courtyards and Inner Baileys of Alnwick Castle were used to film the students of Hogwarts going about their daily activities. 
The Inner Bailey at Alnwick Castle was used in the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It’s when Harry and Ron Weasley are flying the Ford Anglia over Hogwarts and end up crashing into the Whomping Willow.

The Main Courtyard

During the first movie, the Alnwick Castle courtyard is where we see Harry and his fellow classmates walk from their first Charms class saying "it's Levi-O-Sa, not Levi-o-SA", and where Ron says the iconic "she's a nightmare, honestly! No wonder she hasn't got any friends" about Hermione.
You can see this filming spot in the Inner courtyard just before you head inside the state rooms. Look for the tunnel and row of archways that Hermione walks through really upset. 

Courtyard Archway

Make your way through to the inner courtyard archway, you can see the spot where Hagrid drags the Hogwarts Christmas Tree through to the Great Hall

The Lion Archway

This grand stone gateway connects the Inner and Outer Baileys. During filming, the Lion Arch of Alnwick Castle was used as a way in and out of Hogwarts. It was the way to go if students wanted to visit Hagrid or were sent to the Forbidden Forest.
If you make your way through to the inner courtyard archway, you can see the spot where Hagrid drags the Hogwarts Christmas Tree through to the Great Hall, and when Hagrid and the golden trip walking together when they were heading to his hut.

Cool Alnwick Castle filming details:

There’s a tall bank that runs along to the entrance. During filming, Robbie Coltrane would walk on the higher ground, while the golden trio walked on the regular path! This was one of the tricks film makers did to make Robbie Coltrane seem taller than he was.
The movie production team used fake snow to make it look like it had snowed heavily on the castle grounds.

Flying Lessons at Alnwick Castle

One of the most popular activities is the Broomstick Training Experience. Lessons are held in the very location where Harry Potter had his first flying lesson in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It's a must-do experience for those of all ages.
Under expert guidance from instructors, inspired by hundreds of years of historical witches and wizards, you’ll be taught basic skills like cornering, manoeuvring, accelerating, and braking.
Lessons occur at intervals throughout the day (weather permitting), so you can find a time that works best for you.

Price:

Alnwick Castle Broomstick Training sessions are free but require a time-slot ticket, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

 Tickets can be collected upon arrival ask our staff for details. Keep your ticket safe, as you'll need to show it at the start of your lesson.

What to expect during your Broomstick Training Lesson:

Master essential skills for any budding wizards and witches with Broomstick Training at Alnwick Castle! Expect - plenty of fun along the way. their expert instructors love to share a laugh, and they believe you learn best when you're enjoying yourself.
Once you've perfected your flying skills, it's time to prepare for takeoff! After your lesson, you'll have the chance to snap photos of your launch-how it's done is a wizarding secret, but the professors will share all with those who pass. 

Tip:

Have your phone and camera ready to capture the evidence at the end of the lesson because you only get 5 minutes after the class before brooms have to be returned.
If you want to capture a photo that looks like you're flying, follow the steps below:
  1. Set your camera to burst mode (or continuous shooting)
  2. Mount your broom and jump as high as you can, tucking your legs up underneath you
  3. Repeat until you get that perfect shot

‘Alnwick On Location’ Film Tour

While you’re welcome to explore the castle grounds for yourself, Alnwick Castle also offers a guided tour. The 30-45 minute tour is included in your ticket price and led by a movie expert who’ll provide you with the inside scoop on the different Harry Potter set locations, pointing out the different Harry Potter Alnwick Castle scenes.

Alnwick Castle’s newest addition! You can find the Napoleonic Cannon on the Gun Terrace where they have frequent live firings.

Master Archer demonstrates the technique of a medieval English longbow.

Fusiliers Museum of Northumberland

Armoury Takeaway

Located in the medieval Artisans Courtyard, the Armoury Takeaway offers a selection of freshly prepared paninis, sandwiches, sweet treats, and hot and cold drinks—perfect for a quick bite.
Open: 10am to 4pm (school holidays only)

Courtyard Cafe

The cafe offers a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches, soups, and savoury bites.  If you're craving a treat, they have a range of cakes and sweet treats, perfectly paired with a variety of hot and cold drinks.

Pizzeria and Ice Cream Parlour

Here you can choose from a selection of handmade food and beverages. Enjoy freshly made pizzas, cakes, and salads, along with locally sourced ice cream from Morwick Dairy. 

Street Food Trucks

Alnwick Castle partners with local suppliers and businesses, and during peak times, a variety of street food trucks serve up an exciting range of cuisines. Just head to the Courtyard to enjoy a selection of delicious dishes from the vendors.
During our visit to Alnwick Castle, the Rolling Pig food truck was available selling traditional hog roast. My sandwich tasted AMAZING!

Courtyard Gift Shop

This is the main gift shop at Alnwick Castle, and it's located within the cobbled courtyard beyond the Clock Tower.  
 
Inside you will find a wide selection of books, sweet treats, gifts, toys and collectables.  From Harry Potter memorabilia to replica medieval armour and anything in between, you are sure to find something for everyone.

Located by the exit of the Alnwick Castle State Rooms, the Diana Shop offers a range of traditional gifts and collectable items. Here you will find silverware, tapestries and jewellery along with other unique gifts exclusive to the Diana Shop.

  • Robin Hood: PRINCE of THIEVES featured Alnwick Castle as the imposing Nottingham Castle. The castle's architecture provided an authentic medieval backdrop  to the film's action-packed scenes.
